The Army West Point Tae Kwon Do team dominated the NCTA National Championships at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In the Men’s Color Belt Divisions (in various respective weight classes), CDT Eli Eichenberger took 1st and CDT Taylor Wing took 2nd in Red Belt Heavyweight sparring. CDT Ellis Valdez won 1st, CDT Cimingmao Lor won 2nd, and CDT Jackson Darash won 3rd in the Blue Belt Division. CDT Bradley Harrison and CDT Jason Viyar earned 2nd place medals and CDT John Mueller took 1st in Men’s Beginner Sparring. In the Women’s Color Belt Divisions, CDT Jennifer Huntley earned 3rd place and CDT Kristel Guino took 2nd in Women’s Beginner sparring. Both CDT’s Alexandra Baker and Kayla Johnson took 1st in their respective Women’s Beginner weight classes. Additionally, CDT Ellis Valdez won 3rd place in Blue Belt Forms and CDT Sarah Juhn won 3rd place in Women’s White Belt Forms. In the Black Belt divisions, CDT Wonha Kim took 2nd in Women’s Heavyweight, CDT Caleb Lim took 2nd in Men’s Heavyweight, and CDT Matthew Galea took 2nd in Men’s flyweight. At the end of the day, the Army Team won 3 bronze, 8 silver, and 5 gold medals, CDT’s Alexandra Baker, John Mueller, Ellis Valdez, and Eli Eichenberger holding NCTA National Champion titles.

Club Soccer Beats Navy
The Army West Point Cadet Club Soccer Team hosted their Naval counterparts on 23 April, to compete for The Joseph Casey Cup - awarded in Honor of Army all-time leading goal scorer (Class of 1967). In a hard fought contest Army West Point survived early pressure from Navy with Cadet Jakub Smola (2016) making important saves. As the game went on Army West Point played with more confidence and were unfortunate not to take the lead themselves with a last gasp goal line clearance protecting the Navy goal. Army defense was resolute throughout and the game finished with neither side able to find a breakthrough. A penalty shoot-out followed with Smola making the decisive save that eventually ensured an Army West Point victory. The winning spot kick was taken by Cadet Franklin Pugh (2019) and resulted in joyous scenes at the USMAPS field witnessed amongst others by Mr. Casey, and USAG West Point Garrison Commander COL Landy Dunham. Mr. Casey congratulated both teams on their performance and sportsmanship and presented the trophy to Club President Cadet Kyle Morris (2016).

Pre-Medical Society Shadows Doctors at Walter Reed
28 members of the West Point Pre-Medical Society went down to Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, to shadow doctors in an array of specialties. Many of these doctors are old graduates from the Service Academies. The trip included two days of multiple shadows and tours of USU and Georgetown Medical Schools. Additionally, cadets were hosted by Dr. Saguil, Dean of Admissions at USU, for a dinner.

Theatre Arts Guild Goes to Broadway
Theatre Arts Guild travelled to New York City, to attend the Broadway production The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was a unique play with many technical and staging innovations the cadets appreciated. They also related their knowledge of the book, which many of them read in core English classes. After the matinee, cadets explored the city to find another show to see on their own, and the prospects did not disappoint. Cadets saw either Eclipsed, An American in Paris, Tuck Everlasting, or Hamilton. The cadets from the Class of 2016 surprised LTC Kimball with a plaque thanking her for her work in TAG over the past two years.

Civil & Military Engineering Compete in the ASCE
The USMA Civil and Military Engineering Club travelled to Buffalo, NY, to compete in the 2016 ASCE Upstate New York Region Student competition at the University of Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo). The competition consisted of the steel bridge, concrete canoe, Mead ethics essay, and a mystery event. Overall, USMA placed third out of thirteen schools at the competition. The steel bridge won 2nd place for their presentation; CDT’s Abby Toth and Timothy Naifeh won 1st and 2nd place respectively in the Mead ethics paper; and USMA won the mystery event – seismic balsa wood truss and scavenger hunt.

Parachute Host the 3rd Annual ISAM
The West Point Parachute team hosted the 3rd Annual Inter-Service Academy Meet (ISAM) on the Plain. The competition was broken into three different events: Sports Accuracy, 6-way Speed, and 4-way Formation Diving. Due to the weather on the second day, the competition was only able to sport accuracy event. The sport accuracy even was judged on an individual basis, as well as an overall average of a six-man team from each academy. The six-man average scores for Army was 5.42 meters; Air Force had an average score of 5.27 meters. The individual accuracy scores included: 1st place - USMA CDT Clinton Wallace with a score of 2.19 meters; 2nd place - USMA CDT Keaton Crowder with a score of 2.78 meters; 3rd place - USAFA CDT Luke Brown with a score of 3.41 meters

Pistol Training at the Tactical Defense Institute
The Pistol team travelled to the Tactical Defense Institute in West Union, OH, for two and a half days of very intensive tactical live fire training with handguns and the M4 Carbine. The cadets’ tactical marksmanship improved significantly at close quarters battles distances with both the handgun and M4 Carbine and at long distances with the M4 Carbine. Cadets, in four person stacks, cleared multiple rooms in two very challenging live-fire shoot houses in both daylight and low light conditions. Cadets practiced stress shooting techniques where their heart was increased with short bouts of combatives, followed immediately with a free standing 100 yard rifle shoot, then running 75 yards to the 25 yard line
where they engaged steel targets with the handgun. Cadets also trained on a horizontal wall as buddy teams that required them to communicate and then shoot a variety of targets from irregular shooting positions while moving along the wall. Cadets rotated leadership positions to enhance their tactical leadership skills and upperclass cadets, who had been to Tactical Defense Institute previously, served as instructors under the close supervision of TDI instructors. Combat Weapons Competes at the National Competition
Combat Weapons sent 15 cadets to participate in their annual National Competition in Phenix City, AL. After a two day, three gun competition consisting of ten stages, the top
five scoring Cadets from each of the four Military Schools present (USMA, Texas A&M, VMI, and Navy) determined the winning team. The Army West Point Combat Weapons Team placed second overall, just behind Texas A&M. CDT Spencer Ellis placed fourth overall out of sixty cadets. The team demonstrated competency, concentration and cohesiveness, and most importantly beat Navy.

DeSanti, Grabher Earn Weekly Accolades
WEST POINT, NY - The Patriot League released its final weekly award winners of the season and Dan Grabher ’17 and Danny DeSanti ’19 took home honors. Grabher won 8-of-12 faceoffs against No. 6/7 Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon in the Black Knights' season finale. The junior also picked up six ground balls and tallied two shots after winning a pair of draws. Grabher finished the season winning .639 percent of his faceoffs taken and a total of 86 ground balls – a career high in a season. Women’s Team Handball 5th Consecutive Championship
The Army West Point Women’s Team Handball brought home its fifth consecutive Collegiate National Championship in Chapel Hill, NC. West Point Black dominated all weekend, defeating West Point Gold and the University of Carolina in the round robin play prior to the final match. Additionally, WP Black tied the UNC Alumni team 14-14 in a very hard fought match. Rising senior, and future co-captain, CDT Cora Moody, was awarded the Highest Scorer. Wings CDT Dana Robertson and CDT Lindsay Kiernan played intense offense, securing most of the wing shots for WP Black. On the other hand, shooters CDT’s Cora Moody, Abby Toth, Kianna Duncan, and Olivia Beattie posed a threat from the outside. Due to the team’s diverse shooting capability, teams were forced to play fair defense across the court. Although offense was on point, it was WP’s defense that secured the victories. West Point Gold also made a good showing, losing to the University of Carolina only by a few points in its opening match. WP Gold finished third overall in the tournament, but have shown exponential growth throughout the semester and will continue to improve. Overall, both teams had an amazing weekend and are proud of their accomplishments.

Fencing Celebrates with LTG Caslen & Mrs. Caslen
West Point Women’s Fencing team led by Co-Captains CDT Laura Pleake, and CDT Jamie Whitaker, along with squad members CDT’s Claudia Sun, Rachel Pennington, Haley Hollimon, Lexie Konarek, Beth Forte, Taylor Sharpsten, and Callie Peace were invited to Quarters 100 to spend an evening with LTG Caslen and Mrs. Caslen to celebrate their defeat of Navy.

Men’s Team Handball 10th Consecutive Championship
The Army West Point Men’s Team Handball brought home it’s tenth consecutive (29th over-all) Collegiate National Championship in Chapel Hill, NC. For the second year running, it was an all West Point affair in the National Championship game, where WP Black defeated WP Gold. The team had seven all-stars (4 from WP Black; 3 from WP Gold) to include CDT’s Daniel Alec Zeck, Corinth “Peanut” Cross, Christian “Gumby” McKenrick, Forrest Keller, Nick Schebler, Taylor Neal, and William “Trey” Ratliff. Additionally, WP Gold had the MVP of the tournament in CDT Nick Schebler. WP Black also defeated Air Force for the third time this year in the National Semifinal. Next, the team will compete in the Club National Championships, where both teams expect to be competitive in their Divisions (Black in Elite, Gold in Open).

Bass Fishing at the FLW College Fishing National Qualifier
Two teams from the Army West Point Bass Fishing club competed in the FLW College Fishing National Qualifier on Smith Mountain Lake, VA. In the field of 83 boats, the teams of CDT’s Chase Miller/Parker Meytrott and Drew Hicks/Steve Makowicki brought fish to the scale, but did not place in the Top 10 to punch their ticket to Nationals.

McCravey, Poirier, DePolo Headline Major Awards
CENTER VALLEY, PA- The Army West Point softball team took home three-of-five major Patriot League awards, boasting three first team nods and garnering two second team recognitions. Senior first basemen Kasey McCravey was named the Player of the Year, while freshman pitcher Renee Poirier was the league's Rookie of the Year and head coach Michelle DePolo earned Coach of the Year distinction. McCravey, junior second basemen Alee Rashenskas and sophomore outfielder Kristen McPeek were all named to the All-Patriot League first team. Pipes and Drums Hosts the 34th West Point Military Tattoo
The United States Corps of Cadets Pipes and Drums hosted the 34th West Point Military Tattoo at Trophy Point. On that beautiful day, many local bag-pipe bands and Celtic dance groups from all over the Hudson Valley and Northeast region came to West Point to celebrate Scottish/Irish culture and festivities. The annual Military Tattoo brings together the local community and builds better civil-military relationships with the various local groups near the Academy. This event was the culminating event for the West Point Pipes and Drums Band of the academic year. The event was a manifestation of the cohesiveness and musical skills that the cadets have tediously honed throughout the entire year. The band was happy to host 23 participating groups this year, including a Civil War re-enactment group, three dance troupes, a solo by the USMA String Club, and a visiting military drumline from the United Kingdom.

Harvey Named NWCA All-Academic Team
WEST POINT, NY - Senior Brian Harvey of the Army West Point wrestling team has been named an All-Academic Team member by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, it was announced on Monday. Awarded annually, the NWCA All-Academic Team is comprised of 116 student-athletes. For the second year in a row, half of the Division I champions made the team, while two additional runner-ups were selected. In all, 36 All-Americans were All-Academic selections. Read More

SENSA Team Ties for 1st place at DARPA - SAIC
A cadet research team from the Department of Chemistry and Life Science tied for First Place at the DARPA Service Academies Innovation Challenge (SAIC) in Arlington, VA. Team SENSA tied with Air Force for their project Axon-Sorting Nerve Guides: Giving Prosthetics the Sense of Touch. Please congratulate CDTs Minhee Pak, Haana Yu, Patrick Mullin, Rebecca Lee, Annette Yoon, and Grace Yu for their inspirational work. The work was motivated by wounded soldiers who suffer terrible injuries relating to nerve damage. The main project is to develop a scaffold to repair large gaps at injured sites that can ultimately be used to sort different nerve axons to give prosthetics a sense of touch.
Nine teams - three each from the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and U.S. Naval Academy - squared off in a competition at DARPA’s offices to show projects designed to develop practical and potentially transformative technologies that could address a wide variety of challenges facing the U.S. military. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) works to ensure the superiority of U.S. military force technology. The SAIC works to excel and promote promising talent for the next generation of military leaders in a unique environment that blends academic research with a deep understanding of current and future military needs. SAIC works to cultivate the great potential of these future officers and encourage their career-long interest in research and collaboration with DARPA.
The panel of DARPA Service liaison officers judged each project with the most weight toward whether the project addressed current or anticipated future Defense Department (DoD) challenges over the short and long term. The judges also evaluated whether each project’s approach was significantly novel and technically feasible to create transformative capabilities to significantly improve existing technologies. Team SENSA’s research is sponsored through DoD funding in particular by the MRMC through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP). The project is advised by LTC Luis Alvarez, Dr. Alex Mitropoulos, and Dr. Joe Loverde.

Lindner, Rosoff Named to All-Patriot League Teams
CENTER VALLEY, PA - Junior Kris Lindner and sophomore Jon Rosoff represent Army West Point baseball among the 24 athletes on the All-Patriot League teams after the league announced the selections Tuesday morning. Lindner was named to the first team at shortstop as one of four unanimous selections, while Rosoff was a second team selection at catcher. Lindner was the team's leading hitter throughout the year after starting 46 of the team's 48 games at shortstop. His .315 clip led the Black Knights and ranked 10th league wide, recording a team-high 52 hits in 165 at bats. The Morehead City, N.C., native's on-base percentage of .430 ranked fourth among Patriot League hitters, while his 14 stolen bases placed him second. Men’s Tennis Captures Three Major League Awards
CENTER VALLEY, PA - The Army West Point men's tennis team captured three of the Patriot League's four major awards, announced on Tuesday. Jim Poling was honored as Coach of the Year, David Mitchell earned Freshman of the Year and Harrison McCormick and Grant Riechmann were named the Doubles Team of the Year. Additionally, Sam Lampman was named to the All-Patriot League First Team while Mitchell, Michael Nguyen, and Riechmann garnered All-Patriot League Second Team honors. Poling led the Black Knights to an 18-8 record and a Patriot League Title over Navy to earn his fifth Coach of the Year award. It was the third-straight season Army reach at least 18 wins, its ninth league title and seventh NCAA Tournament berth. 21 Cadets & BG Trainor Inducted in to Phi Alpha Theta
The USMA chapter of the national history honors society Phi Alpha Theta formally inducted 21 cadets and BG Trainor as full members. In order to earn membership, each cadet is required to have over a 3.0 GPA and a 3.1 average in at least four history classes. Phi Alpha Theta is focused on encouraging scholarship and service in the field of history to our students. Our ceremony was presided over by the chapter’s president, CDT Erica Macswan, and the master of ceremony CDT Margaret Ireland. BG Trainor, COL Seidule, and Dr. Randy Roberts presented words of wisdom and inspiration to our cadets. Parents from as far away as Maryland and North Carolina drove to USMA to attend this ceremony and support the induction.
