Refinery Trip Section. On Monday, 12 January 2015, 47 USMA Chemical Engineering cadets and faculty traveled to the Phillips 66, Bayway Refinery located on the New York Harbor in Linden, NJ. The refinery is the largest transportation fuels producer on the east coast and distributes its products to U.S. consumers throughout a vast network of barges, trucks, pipelines and railcars. Cadets and faculty were generously hosted by the Bayway team, Mr. Paul Dietrich, Mr. Steven Dietrich and Ms. Lynne Launchi who escorted the USMA contingent on a customized tour of plant operations. In addition to seeing and experiencing various applications of chemical separation and reaction engineering, students also learned a great deal about the recent Hurricane Sandy event and its impact on the refinery from both an economic and security standpoint. Cadets and faculty were amazed at how plant emergency personnel planned, trained and executed disaster

Civil Engineering Club Attends 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders. The West Point Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) attended the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders in Miami, FL, 9-10 Jan 2015. The workshop focus was on improving ASCE student chapters through chapter activities, integration with local and national ASCE groups, and working with ASCE younger member groups. Over 50 ASCE student chapters were represented at the workshop, including chapters from the New England and New York region, the Mid-West region, the Mid-Atlantic region and the Southeast region. The student workshop was in conjunction with an ASCE workshop for section and branch leaders and a younger member council workshop, which allowed student members to meet young professionals and ASCE leaders. There were breakout sessions on education outreach, fundraising, member recruitment and retention, the faculty advisor role, and working with younger member groups. At the workshop, cadets had an opportunity to network with ASCE leaders, including: Mr Robert Stevens, the ASCE president, and LTC(R) Jim O’Brien, a former D/CME faculty member. The United States Military Academy continues to maintain significant connections with other Civil Engineering professionals and educators within the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Civil & Military Engineering Club Visits WTC Transportation Hub: The West Point Civil and Military Engineering club toured the ongoing construction site at Ground Zero in Manhattan, going inside the new state-of-the-art transportation hub onsite known as The Oculus, Building 1 (Freedom Tower), and Building 4 on Saturday, 24 Jan 2015. The tour was offered and led by COL Steve Hill (USA Ret.) of the NY-NJ Port Authority. The highlight of the trip for Cadets and faculty in attendance was the exclusive access to the unoccupied 54th floor of Building 4 with skyline views of the entire lower Manhattan. Cadets were able to learn from the amazing synchronization of labor, construction management techniques, steel and concrete use, and overall engineering and architectural brilliance that is encompassed on the site to memorialize the lives lost on 11 Sep 2001. At the culmination of the site tour, cadets got a self-guided tour of the newly opened 9/11 Memorial Museum, a very memorable experience for all.
