Fencing at the Lampell InvitationalThe Women’s Fencing Squad co-hosted the Matt Lampell ’42 Invitational at Vassar College. Matt Lampell competed on the Fencing Team and went on to Coach Vassar College. He was also a good friend to the Army West Point Fencing Team, and still is. This Invitational is an annual event to honor him. In the Team Event, the women defeated four of their opponents: Queens College by a score of 14-13; Long Island University by a score of 17-10; City College of NY at 21-6 and Yeshiva University at 15-12. The women only dropped losses to host Vassar College and University of Florida. In the Individual Results, CDT Sun on the Foil Squad finished in First Place with a record of 20-1, the only woman with 1 loss for the entire day. Right on her heels was CDT Sharpsten of the Sabre Squad with a record of 19-2 (there was a tie for second place). West Point’s other high place for the day was Epee Fencer CDT Yang coming in at 12-9. In Weapon Results, the Foil Squad came in at 5-2 for one of the highest finishes at the Invitational. The Men’s Fencing Squad competed in MAAC Conference matches. The men came away with a 3-2 record defeating conference rivals Rutgers (15-12), Lafayette (15-12) and College of NJ (15-12) while only losing to Drew (12-15) and Division I Cornell (9-18). The Men had top performers in results at the dual meets and highlighted in each weapon at the competition were CDT Papa in the Weapon of Sabre at 11-4, CDT Kurtzahn and CDT Griffin both in the Weapon of Foil (Dan’s record was 11-3 and Tyler’s 10-5); and in the Weapon of Epee it was both CDT Johnson (10-5) and CDT Sparano (9-3). The overall record for the Men in Conference Standings puts them in the Top 20% of all Teams.
