Four cadets from the Army West Point Triathlon Team traveled to San Diego to compete in the Ironman 70.3 Superfrog triathlon in Coronado. Superfrog is the oldest half-ironman event in the world and was developed by Navy Seals to prepare them for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, HI. It serves as the military world championship qualifier with qualification spots to both the Ironman and Ironman 70.2 World Championships for military competitors from all branches of services from all countries. The team endured the 10 foot waves, soft sand run and heat on the beaches of Coronado to complete the 1.2-mile open water swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run (half of which was on the beach). The team members posted good showings with CDT’s Annah DeVries ’19 and Hailey Conger ’19 placing 3rd and 4th respectively in the female service academy division and 4th and 5th in the female 18-24 age-group division. For each, it was their second 70.3-mile event and they both set personal records dropping over 30 minutes from their previous race. On the male side, CDT Dylan Varrato ’17 placed 5th in the service academy and the 18-24 age-group male division. Also competing was the OIC of the team, LTC Ken Allen, who finished 7th in the 45-49 age-group division and earned a spot at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship on 9 Sept 2017 in Chattanooga, TN.
